Vintage original 28 5/8 x 20 ¼” (73 x 51 cm.), Japan.  Charles Bukowski, Tom Waits, Barbet Schroeder, dir: John Dullaghan; Zazie Films.  Documentary about the life and work of legendary renegade Los Angeles poet Bukowski.  This film had a tiny theatrical release in the U.S.  This Japanese poster is so uncommon that I cannot trace another example of it anywhere.  Unfolded, with some horizontal creasing and light crimping at edges, NEAR FINE.

CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 [CLEO DE 5 A 7] (1962)
CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 [CLEO DE 5 A 7] (1962) $0.00

Vintage original 29 x 20" (74 x 52 cm.) B2 poster, Japan. Corinne Marchand, Antoine Bourseiller, Dominique Davray, Dorothé Blanc, Michel Legrand, dir: Varda, Towa.

One of the classic movies of the French New Wave. A beautiful young singer (Corinne Marchand) is awatiing the results of medical tests which may or may not reveal that she has a terminal illness. In the interval, in seemingly real time, she encounters friends, contemplates new song lyrics presented to her by two songwriters, and meets by chance a stranger, a French soldier at the end of a three-week leave from fighting...

Vintage original 28 5/8 x 20 ¼” (73 x 51 cm.), Japan.  William Hurt, Raul Julia, Sonia Braga, dir: Hector Babenco.  Adapted from novel by Manuel Puig, classic psychological drama, for which Hurt won a Best Actor Oscar.  There were two different styles of Japanese poster made for the film, one showing Braga as the Spider Woman, and this one, with Hurt in drag.  Unfolded, but with vertical creases, and slight crimples to paper in margins, NEAR FINE.

LUIS BUNUEL / BELLE DE JOUR (1967) $2,000.00

Vintage original 20 x 57" (51 x 145 cm.) STB ("Tatekan") poster, Japan. Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michel Piccoli, Genevieve Pate, Pierre Clementi, dir: Luis Buñuel; Paris Film Productions / Five Films.

The film's intimate moments are presented in this unique poster layout. Called Luis Buñuel's masterpiece of erotica, it is the story of a frigid housewife who spends her afternoons as a prostitute while otherwise maintaining her chaste relationship with her doctor husband. The title refers to a day lily, a flower which blooms only by day. A surreal classic from Bunuel.

On linen, FINE.

PIERROT LE FOU (1965; 1967 first-Japanese release)
PIERROT LE FOU (1965; 1967 first-Japanese release) $300.00

Vintage original 28 x 20" (72 x 51 cm.) poster, Japan. Jean-Pierre Belmondo, Anna Karina, dir: Jean-Luc Godard. One of the classics of the French New Wave, and one of Godard's great collaborations with his then-wife Anna Karina.

This Japanese poster presents a wonderful alternate design for Godard's crazed crime film, shot mostly on the French Riviera with extreme saturated color by Raoul Coutard. On linen, with small touch-ups along folds and edges, NEAR FINE.

TRIP, THE (1967)
TRIP, THE (1967) $500.00

Vintage original 58 x 20" (148 x 51 cm.) two-panel poster, Japan. Peter Fonda, Susan Strasberg, Dennis Hopper, dir: Roger Corman; American International. One of the iconoclastic Corman's most idiosyncratic films, and frequently referred to as his most personal one -- a time capsule of hippie life and the Sunset Strip back in the swinging 60s. This scarce Japanese poster, with its psychedelic colors and sensual graphics, is a strong visual representation of this classic 60s film. Here, the slogan is "a Love Story of Dreams." In two pieces (as printed), each section has only two horizontal (and no vertical)...

UGETSU (1953)
UGETSU (1953) $6,500.00

Vintage original 39 x 27" (97 x 67 cm.) poster, Japan. Masayuki Mori, Machiko Kyô, Kinuyo Tanaka, dir: Kenji Mizoguchi; Daiei Studios. One of the finest and rarest of posters of classic Japanese cinema.

The film tells the story of the struggles of the people during the Japanese Civil Wars of the sixteenth century. The original complete title Ugetsu Monogatari roughly translates as "Tales of the Moon and Rain".

This poster does not appear to have been used and, though originally tri-folded, it has been stored rolled. There are spots of soiling in the background area between the two prominent characters, otherwise...

VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1967) $750.00

Vintage original 57 x 20" (145 x 51 cm.) poster, Japan. Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, Susan Hayward, dir: Mark Robson; Fox. There is no way around it -- this film is one of the ultimate classics of incredibly memorable trash, with one quotable line after another. And who can resist this scarce Japanese poster, with portraits of the four female principals against a snow-laden background of heroine Parkins' New England home?

On linen, poster was virtually immaculate prior to backing, JUST ABOUT FINE.
