GO WEST (1940)
GO WEST (1940) $0.00 SOLD

Vintage original 12 x 8;" (68 x 102 cm.) color trade ad, USA. Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx, John Carroll, Diana Lewis, dir: Edward Buzzell; MGM. A most fun and lively of all Marx Brothers art pieces. It is also amongst the finest examples of the art renderings by Jacques Kapralik, the collage artist who specialized in three dimensional art pieces, highlighting many MGM films during the late-1930s and through the 1940s.

Karpralik had a knack for pinpointing character and story line by borrowing from props and costume pieces used in the film, all evident here. The story had the...

GREED (1924)
GREED (1924) $2,500.00 SOLD

Vintage original 13 x 6" (33 x 15 cm.) flyer / herald, USA. Gibson Gowland, Zasu Pitts, Jean Hesholt, dir: Erich Von Stroheim; MGM. This large flyer was used as part of the promotional campaign for Stroheim's masterpiece of silent cinema, Greed, with its wanted poster design offering $1,000.00 for the arrest of John McTeague for murder.

Very little original paper has survived from this landmark film. As to posters, all that has ever surfaced is a disappointing window card (which does not show any of the characters) and this remarkable wanted poster. I have never handled another, and am certain...

JACK SMITH / 'I WAS A MEKAS COLLABORATOR' (1979)
JACK SMITH / 'I WAS A MEKAS COLLABORATOR' (1979) $2,500.00 SOLD

Vintage original 13 x 13" (33 x 33 cm.) poster, USA, for a multimedia show created by the legendary Jack Smith (1932-1989), director of such underground films as Flaming Creatures, and belatedly recognized as one of the creators of performance art.

After Flaming Creatures was premiered, Smith and others (including Jonas Mekas, who was in so many ways the godfather of the then-new American underground film movement) were jailed for obscenity, and a lengthy -- and miserable -- legal process ensued. Mekas believed that Smith's flamboyant wildness would be disastrously received in a courtroom, and tried to find an alternative resolution....

METROPOLIS TRADE AD (1927)
METROPOLIS TRADE AD (1927) $1,500.00 SOLD

Vintage original 12 x 9" (30 x 22 cm.) trade ad, USA. Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Frohlich, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Fritz Rasp, Theodor Loos, Erwin Biswanger, dir: Fritz Lang, UFA. Superb originality highlighted this silent German-Expressionist film. The stunning special effects and design rival any of our state-of-the-art technical achievements of today.

The story is set in the future where humans are divided into the two categories: thinkers and workers. Neither group understands the other, nor have a sense of fulfillment. A man, one of the thinkers, dares to venture into the land of the workers; from that time...

PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, THE / CONCEPT AD ART BY BUELL (1934) $200.00 SOLD

Vintage original 8 x 15" (20 x 38 cm.) ink and gauche conceptual advertising painting on art board, USA. Francis Lederer, Joan Bennett, Charles Ruggles, Mary Boland, dir: Alexander Hall; Paramount. Set during the colonial war, a Hessian soldier in the British army falls for an American girl.

Advertising artist B. Buell has captured the features of stars Francis Lederer and Joan Bennett in his simple and charming art while suggesting the light weight romantic tone of the story. A rare film, only a nitrate print is known to survive. Rarely is art like this seen, which was most likely used...

ROOM SERVICE (1938)
ROOM SERVICE (1938) $300.00 SOLD

Vintage original 12 x 9 " (31 x 23 cm) color trade ad, USA. Marx Brothers (Groucho, Chico and Harpo), Lucille Ball, Ann Miller, Frank Albertson, dir: William A Seiter; RKO.

The three brothers ventured to RKO for one production under Pandro S. Berman for this comedy based on the Broadway play. The brothers try to produce a play but run out of money, and so come up with schemes to continue to stay in their hotel while not paying the bill. Though Morrie Ryskind adapted the play for the Marx Brothers, it was the only film they made in...
