CORN IS GREEN, THE (1945)

Sold

Vintage original 11 x 14″ (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card set of eight (8), USA. Bette Davis, Nigel Bruce, John Dall, Joan Lorring, Rhys Williams, Mildred Dunnock, dir: Irving Rapper; Warner Brothers. From the famous Emlyn Williams Broadway play.

Bette Davis, in perhaps her most unmannered performance, plays a teacher in a Welsh mining town who sets up a school to teach fundamentals to the villagers. One student turns out to be brilliant, and she does all she can to encourage him so as he can have a life outside of the town. This was basically the autobiography of playwright Emlyn Williams.

Key scenes and all of the main characters are represented in this set of cards, the scenes washed in red (as was a corporate design look to Warner Brothers’ promotional art of the mid 1940s). Though Davis was surprisingly not nominated for an Academy Award for this performance, John Dall as the student and Joan Lorring, in perhaps the most unflinching portrayal of a low-class tramp for a film of the time, were nominated in supporting categories. There are some minor stains to title card and some scattered, rather minor signs of use to scene cards, but this set is in really nice condition, overall ABOUT FINE.
