Week after week, the Cartwrights -- a father and three sons (each born of a different wife) shared adventures on their Ponderosa Ranch near Virginia City, NV. Much of the series was filmed at Paramount Studios backlot.

Vintage original 7 x 8 ¾” (18 x 21 cm.) black and white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA.  James Dean’s short life and career was most prolific during 1954 and 1955; not only did he finish three major motion pictures, but continuously appeared in several TV Series playhouse dramas, including THE UNLIGHTED ROAD for Schlitz Playhouse.  This was the story of a boy who is hijacked and framed for murder.  This original portrait was used for a Jun 1, 1956 re-broadcast of the show....

This was the first of what would become a slew of rural comedies, and all the then-existing networks initially turned it down. It eventually debuted on CBS in 1957 and became a huge success, which in turn led to other shows like BEVERLY HILLBILLIES and PETTICOAT JUNCTION, all of them with country folk as the protagonists. In the case of this show, Walter Brennan starred as Grandpa Amos McCoy, the patriarch of a West Virginia family who move to the San Fernando Valley in suburban Los Angeles.
