Screenplay by Thomas C. Ryan for this now classic adaptation of Carson McCullers’ novel about racism, poverty, and loneliness in a small Southern town. The film updated the novel’s small-town Southern setting from the Depression era to the contemporary 1960s. It received two Academy Award nominations (Alan Arkin for Best Actor and Sondra Locke for Best Supporting Actress) and four Golden Globe nominations, including one for Best Drama. (Wikipedia)
