A gaggle of 1940s sweater girls gather around Prof. Frederick Brenner, alias Karl Wagner (Bela Lugosi), who teaches them psychology. But this is just one of his faces, as he also plays a kindly character who runs a night time soup kitchen in the Bowery. The soup kitchen, however, is really a front for his role as a crime boss and he uses the mission to recruit down-and-out people, including convicts, into his racket. When things get out of hand in a series of robberies and murders, he kills his henchmen — who turn into zombies in the cellar of the soup kitchen.
