BABY FACE (1933) Pre-code scene with Barbara Stanwyck

Sold

[Los Angeles: Warner Brothers, 1933]. Vintage original 7 3/4″ x 9 3/4″ (19 x 24 cm.) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. Full cast and crew credits printed on verso as is ink stamp from Photoplay magazine dated April 1933. Border slightly trimmed for publication, about fine.

One of the most notorious of pre-Code films, one which even at the time many states would not approve without major scenes being deleted. Only recently was a pre-release version found and all of the objectionable (and some never before seen) material replaced to present a truly shocking story of a woman making it in the world by her own rules.

Barbara Stanwyck could do most anything, and she proved so in her performance in Baby Face. In this photo, her saloon-running father pimps her out to a patron (Athur Hohl); she fights him off and soon after the entire joint — and her father — are burned in flames.

Photo is coded BF-11.
