Director King Vidor and crew work with stars James Murray and Eleanor Boardman. Much of the film was shot in Manhattan, New York- area locations. The Venice Beach amusement park was an exception. This location, which is featured in the couple’s courting period, may well have also been filmed at Venice Beach. Vidor’s pet project, production executive Irving Thalberg gave him the red light despite studio boss Louis B. Mayer’s objections (which lost the film the first Academy Awards). To this day, filmmakers deem it the finest film about the common man ever made.
