The stars and staff of MGM gathered in April 1939 to celebrate Lionel Barrymore‘s 61st birthday and his 30th year in film, having debuted with D. W. Griffith in 1909. Studio head Louis B. Mayer joins some of the studio’s top stars who would make major classic films that year: Mickey Rooney, Robert Montgomery, Clark Gable, William Powell, Robert Taylor, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell.
