Brilliant tale of hostesses told with as much candor as post-Production Code Hollywood was allowed. Working girl Bette Davis displays herself in one of her most glamorous gowns on this fine Warner Brothers poster of the period. The beaded gown (represented in red on this card) was made for her by Orry-Kelly.

Vintage original 17 x 11" (43 x 28 cm.) pressbook, USA; Folio, 20 pp., with an additional "ADVERTISING SECTION" laid-in loosely, 22 x 17" (56 x 43 cm.), 6 pp. Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, dir: Lloyd Bacon, Michael Curtiz (uncredited). Classic gangster film, with Bette Davis as a supposed "hostess at a clip joint" who is eventually persuaded by the district attorney (Bogart) to testify against her murderous gangster boss.

This is a quite rare book, and to find it complete -- with no ads cut-out, and with its gigantic advertising supplement as well -- is quite a treat....

James M. Cain's novel was more a story of the Depression and a woman's struggle to overcome that and her mediocre life situations. The Warner Brothers screenplay framed it as a murder mystery, set with high 1940s fashions. Amongst the contributing writers to the script was William Faulkner.

A classic crime melodrama of the 1930s, from Robert E. Sherwood's play. Both Howard and Bogart starred in the play on Broadway, and though he had made several films earlier on, this return to film made Bogart a star in character roles for several years thereafter.
